NFL Preseason Week 1 Notes: Kansas City Chiefs at New Orleans Saints

  • Chiefs opened the game in uptempo offense with focus on short passing game.
  • Lots of dumpoffs and short defined reads for Smith.
  • Jamaal Charles an obvious focus early.
  • Saints’ defense is getting zero pressure on the QB even with extra time.
  • Andy Reid is using Alex Smith’s athleticism by rolling him out and moving him around.
  • KC LT Brendan Albert strong in pass protection but needs to improve run blocking
  • NO DE/OLB Will Smith is getting stoned at the point of attack. No push.
  • Saints didn’t draw up many complicated blitzes. Very vanilla.
  • Jamaal Charles is the centerpiece of this offense in the 1st quarter.
  • Saints offensive line seems porous. Obvious QB Brees doesn’t trust it.
  • Chiefs’ LBs are slow to attack line of scrimmage. Need to play downhill with authority.
  • NO DE Cameron Jordan flashed. Got pressure and chased the ball all over the field.
  • Saints’ LT Charles Brown wasn’t a wall on the left side but allowed too many rushers by him. He needs to be better on Brees’ blindside.
  • NO RB Travaris Cadet played well. Runs a little like Chris Ivory but less violent. Showed decent hands and hits holes hard. Needs to learn to setup blocks downfield.
  • QB Luke McCown looked like a capable backup, but the Saints are in trouble if Brees goes down with an injury.
  • KC DT Dontari Poe played with speed and strength inside. Extremely disruptive & penetrated with consistency.
  • KC WR Dexter McCluster seems to be used in more of a “weapon” role than as traditional WR. KC wants to get him the ball in space.
  • KC QB Tyler Bray only played 2 series and was limited in reps. He had multiple drops on the few passes he threw.
  • KC QB Ricky Stanzi is clearly the 4th QB in terms of talent. Smart player but lacking in physical aspects.
  • NO WR Kenny Stills made a couple of nice plays but needs to haul in more of the passes thrown his way. Needs hands work, but clear #3 WR right now.
  • KC S Hussain Abdullah made a couple of nice tackles. Chiefs will need a rangy, good tackling FS to play behind the aggressive S Eric Berry.
  • I get the feeling that teams will press the Chiefs during the season, take away the short throws, and force QB Smith to beat them over the top.
  • QB Brees and Head Coach Sean Payton may be the only reason the New Orleans offense succeeds. The OL is concerning. The defense didn’t institute much of the playbook and is hard to evaluate because of that.
  • Jimmy Graham is the hardest TE to cover in the NFL.
